Mexico City in 2 days!
It´s no real surprise that National Geographic has designated Mexico City as number #1 destiny in 2019. It´s possible to visit Mexico City for the weekend, and we are going to tell you exactly how.
The truth is this city has a lot to offer to everyone, whether you are searching for relaxation, a highly cultural experiencie, art, a culinary tour from different types of cuisines, or just stay in a comfy hotel, Mexico City has got it all.
At Hoteles de Barrio we have made a curated itinerary for you to live and experience as much as possible in two days!
Arrival Friday: 12:00 p.m. – Normally, most flights arrive at miday, so you should be aware that it might take you a while to get from the airport to your hotel. You should be making your check-in at 3:00 p.m. The first thing we recommend to do is know which restaurants are near your hotel. If you are staying at Casa Goliana or Nima Local House Hotel
the options to grab a bite are incredible from fine dining restaurants like Huset or Blanco Colima and taco places like Orinoco , you are going to be amazed by the gastronomic offer of this area. We highly recommend you to contact your hotel´s concierge to make your dinner reservations.
3:00 p.m. – The first place we recommend is going to the Historic Center, the truth is , there is no better place to understand Mexico City ´s history and culture than this busy neighborhood. I had an excellent anthropology teacher that once told me that most downtowns in every country should have the presence of the church, the state and the finance segments. The Historic Center has got more than that. If you are travelling Mexico in order to get to know more about the prehispanic civilization and how the Spanish conquerors transformed history, this is the perfect spot.
We recommend you to first visit Palacio Nacional, you only require an official ID, and you can admire Diego Rivera´s murals that represent Epic Mexico´s history from several centuries. The murals go from 256 square meters, and it is ideal to start understanding what happened in Mexico.
What makes Zocalo so distinctive from other cities in the entire world is Templo Mayor, a seven stage Aztec pyramid located underneath a Christian cross. It is open to public with a large explanation of the civilization, the political order, and the magnificence of rituals and sacrifices, definitely a must if you have no time to visit Teotihuacan (pyramids located 56 km from Mexico City).
Prepare for your dinner selection and rest for another incredible day.
Saturday 10:00 a.m – Book tickets to Frida Kahlo´s House ( The Blue House) , it is preferable to go from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. , as less people book and the house will be mostly empty, you should note this is not a museum, it is the painter´s house adapated to receive turists interested in her art and life. You are going to fall in love with Coyoacan neighborhood, the most bohemian area in the city where artists, history and cultture collide. You can book your tickets here!
11:30 a.m. – Head to Bazaar del Sábado is a highly recommended option, it is located in San Angel neighborhood and home to the Diego Rivera Studio. We recommend you to have lunch at San Angel Inn (right next to Diego Rivera´s studio), we highly advice you to book a private tour for the house, as there are no written explanations in English. What is impressive about this Juan O´Gorman´s designed house? It was specially built for Diego to have an inspitarional and practical space to paint his murals.
3:00 p.m- 4:00 p.m. -After this, we suggest you to walk at Bazaar del Sabado, it is a 20 minutes walk from Diego Rivera´s Studio, or if you prefer you can get an Uber ride. You are going to meet several local artists and impressive mexican artisans for exquisite paintings , clothing and accesories.
Why do we select Coyoacan & San Angel? These are neighborhoods that were located outside of the city. The enormous houses located here belonged to the wealthiest mexicans during the spanish colony, and they also have a lot of christian presence with churches that are truly architectural gems. You can get a small town vibe and still be at one of the most populated cities in the world.
7:00 p.m. Dinner reservation where your concierge suggests.
Sunday- Free time to wander around Roma and Condesa neighborhoods. Stay tuned for our favorites next week.
